# What permissions Ntripi asks for, and why

> Location, notifications, photos and motion — what each is for, when you are asked, and how to change your mind.

Ntripi asks for four things, each at the moment it is first useful rather than at launch. **It never asks for your camera, your contacts, your microphone, or your location in the background.** Refusing any of them leaves the app working.

## Location — why?

To centre the map on where you are when you add a stop, so you are not scrolling across a continent to find the town you are standing in.

It is asked the first time you use the map's locate button, and **only while you are using the app** — there is no background location and no tracking. Refusing does not block anything: the map opens elsewhere and you pan to your spot.

## Notifications — why, and why only once?

To tell you about follow requests, ratings, saves and moderation decisions.

You are asked the first time you open the **notifications screen** — that is, at the moment you have just shown you want them. iOS allows an app exactly one prompt per install, so asking at launch, in front of an app you have not seen yet, would spend that one chance on a stranger.

## Photos — what does Ntripi see?

Only the image you pick. Ntripi opens your system's photo picker, which hands back a single file and nothing else — it has no view of your library.

Every upload has its **EXIF metadata stripped**, including the GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken. See [cover photos](/help/trip-cover-photos).

## Motion and vibration — what for?

Shaking the phone files a bug report, and the phone buzzes briefly to acknowledge things like setting a rating.

Both can be switched off in **Settings**: **Shake to report** and **Haptics**. Nothing about your movement leaves the device.

## What does Ntripi never ask for?

The **camera**, your **contacts**, your **microphone**, and **background location**. None of them appear in the app, and none are declared in the builds we ship.

## How do I change a permission later?

Permissions belong to your operating system, not to Ntripi, so they are changed there:

- **iPhone or iPad** — Settings ▸ scroll to Ntripi ▸ toggle Location or Notifications.
- **Android** — Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Ntripi ▸ Permissions.

This matters most for notifications, which iOS will not re-prompt for: once refused, the Settings app is the only way back.
