# How to add a cover photo to your trip

> Pick a cover image, crop it, and know what gets refused before you upload.

The cover is what people see in the feed and in a shared link, so it does more work than any other single field. Only the trip's **owner** can set it — someone invited to edit can change the content but not the trip's public face.

## Add or change the cover

Open the trip's edit screen and tap the cover area. Your photo library opens; pick an image and crop it to the frame.

The crop is wide, because that is the shape a link preview uses. A tall photo will lose its top and bottom, so choose one whose subject sits in the middle.

## What gets refused, and why

An image can be refused for three reasons:

- **Too small.** Anything under 600 pixels on its shortest side will look soft on a modern screen.
- **An unsupported format.** JPEG, PNG and the usual photo formats are fine.
- **Content.** Uploads are checked automatically against the [community guidelines](/guidelines) before they are stored.

## What Ntripi removes from your photo

Every uploaded image has its **EXIF metadata stripped** before it is stored. That is the block of hidden data a camera attaches — most importantly the **GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken**, along with the device model and timestamp.

This happens whether or not the trip is public, and it cannot be switched off. A photo of your street should not publish your street.

## If you don't add one

A trip with no cover gets a generated placeholder drawn from its route, so it never looks broken.

It is worth adding a real one before sharing publicly, though — in a feed of photographs, the placeholder is the one people scroll past.
